Delegation from the Construction Sector Visits the Technion: “Significant Potential for Collaboration”

This week, we hosted at the Technion a special delegation of representatives from three leading organizations in the construction sector: the Manufacturers Association of Israel (Consumer Goods and Construction Materials Unit), CIVIC-Lab – an innovation hub for the construction industry, and the Shapir Group.
The visit was part of a new program initiated by the Technion’s Innovation and Industry Relations Office, aimed at strengthening ties with the construction sector. It also followed growing interest from these organizations in the Technion’s research capabilities and applied activities relevant to the building environment.

The main objective of the visit was to foster closer relationships, build on existing collaborations, and explore new joint initiatives.

As part of the visit, the delegation toured the innovative Disrupt.Design lab [D.DLAB]  led by Prof. Shany Barath, which focuses on design-led technological research that promotes sustainability in the built environment. At the lab, PhD candidate Miran Calmanovici showcased the ability to print wood waste using bio-based binders. The group also visited the National Building Research Institute (NBRI), headed by Prof. Rafael Sacks, who is expected to lead the newly program aimed at deepening engagement with the construction sector.

The tour continued through various NBRI’s facilities and research labs, where researchers presented cutting-edge developments in science and technology with strong relevance to the construction industry. These included advanced materials, digital construction methods, and AI-driven design and safety systems, underscoring the potential for impactful collaborations.

At the conclusion of the visit, both sides expressed enthusiasm about expanding cooperation, citing the strategic relevance of the technologies presented and the overlap in areas of interest. The strategic importance of the new program was underscored, and it was agreed to jointly promote several initial initiatives in the near future, building a robust foundation for long-term partnership.
